I’ve been going through a Friends rerun phase lately. It has made me reflect back to when I was younger and how simple things were back then. When I told my dad that I have been in a writing rut and binge watching Friends he laughed and said something like “sometimes you just have to clear your head with TV or other distractions for a while” and assured me that my urge to write will come back. Well it did and it has EVERYTHING to do with my Friends binge!
Now, before I go on, I will confess I am a huge fan of social media and most of you know that but lately I feel as though I do not need it as much in my life anymore. When I say “social media” I mean, needing to know what everyone else is doing all the time. Not to mention the TIME wasted on what other people are doing! It is exhausting, addictive and before you know it it’s the end of 2018 and you look back and think about all the time spent on social media and you just shake your head. Of course I am talking about myself here. YOU may not spend as much time on social media as I do and that’s a good thing unless you make money on social media and it is your job to be on. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy seeing my family and friend’s pictures (especially of their animals 🙂 ) but it snowballed into needing to see more and more and before I knew it, I was spending HOURS on social media a day just scrolling, liking, commenting and scrolling some more. One day a few months back I woke up and felt this craving for a simpler life. Not a life without social media but to scale it back…A LOT! I felt this need to go back in time to see how life was before social media to realize how much I do not NEED it in my life and to treat it more as a WANT. And that is how my Friends binge began.
Some of the things that I learned while binge watching Friends:
The life of the characters on Friends was so simple yet fun. The simplicity of meeting your close friends at a coffee shop to catch up or at your apartment in the City was the way of life. Although their lives could be filled with major drama, they always found a way to work through it. And, yes, I know it’s a TV show but what if we started living that way again…simple. I mean, meeting at the coffee shop was the highlight of their day! These days people are more worried about how many complete strangers are watching their political or agenda driven videos. Not simple.
Why don’t we laugh anymore? Why are people stressed out more than they were back in the day? Hell, you can’t make a joke anymore without someone getting offended. Our world has become so serious and honestly I’m getting sick of it! Why can’t we just laugh at someone who has a turkey on their head? Or how about when we wear leather pants, sweat our asses off on a date, go into the bathroom, take them off, then can’t pull them back up because we have put water, lotion and baby powder on our legs then walk out naked? Have you seen that episode? I’ve linked it below. Be careful, you may laugh your ass off!
Friendships are soooo important! Everyone should have a few good people in their life that you can trust WITH YOUR LIFE. Having your tribe is such a great feeling. It may take a while to find out who your REAL tribe is but when you do it’s magical. You can be you…no filter and no judgement. You may all be different in personalities as the Friends characters were, but respect is key. When you have that, you’re family.
In closing, I think I’m going to take a break from some of my social media outlets that waste my time and concentrate more on my real life friendships, this blog, my writing and maybe do some more videos. You may say, “well, blogging and videos are social media too”. Maybe it is. But I don’t think those are a waste of my time. Big difference.
Till next time….I’ll see ya soon!
